Common problem

Air Conditioner Not Cooling in Happy Valley

Your air conditioner is running, the fan is pushing air, and the room will not drop below sweltering. An air conditioner not cooling is the most common fault we get called to across Happy Valley, and the fix is often simpler than it feels on a 38-degree afternoon.

Why Your Aircon Stops Cooling

Cooling fails for a short list of reasons, and most of them show up in the same order. Here they are, cheapest first:

Blocked filter

Dust chokes the airflow, the coil ices over, and cold air never reaches the room. A five-minute clean sometimes fixes it.

Dirty coil

The indoor or outdoor coil is caked in grime, so heat cannot transfer. Common on homes with established gardens and leaf litter.

Low refrigerant

A leak has dropped the charge, so the system runs warm. This one needs a licensed technician, always.

Failed capacitor or compressor

The outdoor unit hums but the heart of the system is not pumping. Repair or replacement, depending on age.

Controller or sensor fault

The unit thinks it has already reached temperature and coasts. We see this on ageing first-generation units.

Plenty of the brick-veneer homes built here through the 1970s and 1980s still run their original system, so age is often part of the picture. We will give you an honest call on repair versus replacement rather than selling you either.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Before you book a technician, two checks cost nothing and solve a fair share of calls.

Check the filter first.

Open the indoor unit and slide out the filter. If it is grey and matted, wash it, let it dry fully, and refit it.

Then check the outdoor unit.

Walk outside and clear away leaves, and check the unit is actually running rather than just humming. If the fan spins and the coil is iced over, switch the system off and let it thaw for an hour, then run the fan only.

Anything past that involves refrigerant, wiring or sealed components, and that is licensed work. Do not open panels or attempt a refrigerant top-up from a hardware store kit. It is illegal without a licence and it usually masks a leak rather than fixing it.

Do not wait on this

When Cooling Problems Need a Technician

Some faults will not heal themselves, and pushing through them makes the damage worse. Call us the same day if any of these sound familiar:

  • The unit blows warm air constantly, even after a filter clean
  • It trips the switchboard or the safety switch
  • The coil ices over again after a thaw
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan never spins

Running a struggling compressor through a heatwave can turn a repair into a full replacement. A system that trips power or smells of burning is an urgent call, not a wait-and-see.

We hold 24/7 emergency availability, so a dead air conditioner on a Saturday night in January is still a phone call worth making.

Why Happy Valley Households Call Us First

We are a local, family-owned Adelaide business with ten years behind us, and the southern suburbs are our regular run. Here is what that means on the job:

Questions

Air Conditioner Not Cooling FAQs

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling the room?

The usual culprits are a blocked filter, a dirty coil or low refrigerant from a leak. We test each one on site and tell you which it is before any work starts.

Can I add refrigerant to the unit myself?

No. Refrigerant handling is licensed work, and a low charge usually means a leak that needs finding first. Topping up without fixing the leak wastes your money.

How quickly can you get here during a heatwave?

We run a Within-the-Hour Response on urgent calls where availability allows, and we are in the southern suburbs most weeks. Ring early on hot days because the book fills fast.

Is it worth repairing an older system, or should I replace it?

If the unit is well past a decade old and the fault is major, replacement often costs less over a few summers. We show you the numbers for both and let you decide.
